- Be at least 18 years old.
- Have completed high school or the equivalent.
- For cosmetology: complete 2,100 hours of training at a state-approved cosmetology school.
- For esthetics: complete 600 hours of training at a state-approved esthetician school.
- Submit an application to the commission by mail.
- Pass the NIC (National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology) written and practical exams.
- Pass the South Dakota cosmetology state laws and rules exam.
- Submit an application through the online licensing portal.
- Pay the required fees.
