To offer beauty services in Rhode Island, you must obtain a license from the Rhode Island Board of Hairdressing and Barbering. Be sure to check for the most up-to-date guidelines when you’re applying for a license. These are the main steps to become licensed:
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Have completed high school or the equivalent.
- For hairdressing/cosmetic therapy: complete 1,000 hours of training at a state-approved school.
- For esthetics: complete 600 hours of training at a state-approved school.
- Pass the NIC (National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology) written exam.
- Submit an application by mail.
- Have your school send your official transcript to the board.
- Pay the required fees.
