Additional Insureds

Additional insureds are other individuals or businesses you add to your general liability insurance policy. Naming them as an additional insured extends your insurance coverage to them, in the event they’re named in a lawsuit with you or because of something you did.

What Is an Additional Insured?

An additional insured is typically another professional entity, like a landlord or event organizer, that could be named in a lawsuit along with you due to your business services, actions, or negligence.

Those listed as additional insureds on your insurance policy benefit from the same protections you do if you’re both sued. Many landlords, organizations, and vendors require you to add them to your policy before they’ll work with you.

What Coverage Do Additional Insureds Receive?

Additional insureds receive the same coverage with the same terms as the policy you have for yourself. BBI policies provide up to $3,000,000 total “aggregate” coverage in one policy year for professional and general liability. This coverage is shared between you and your additional insureds. Your policy also covers lawsuit and claim defense costs separately from your liability coverage, so your $3,000,000 limit isn’t diminished for legal and court fees.

Additional insureds can be anyone with a direct, professional connection to your business. Some common additional insureds include:

  • Landlords who own the property you rent or work in
  • Businesses that hire you as an independent contractor
  • Coordinators or organizations that run events, conventions, or festivals
  • Other venues where you provide services temporarily

People who don’t qualify as additional insureds on your BBI policy include:

  • Coworkers
  • Friends or family
  • Employees

Even if these people help you occasionally with your business or even provide similar services as you, your policy cannot be extended to them.

Who Needs to Include Additional Insureds?

Beauty and bodywork professionals who work in physical spaces where the landlord or business owner requires them to be listed as additional insureds on your insurance.

However, unless you’re specifically required to name additional insureds as part of your work contract or as a condition of employment, you don’t need to add them on your policy.

Common Claim Scenarios Involving Additional Insureds

Some scenarios where you may need additional insureds on your policy include:

You rent a chair at a local MY Salon Suite location and a client experiences a chemical burn to their scalp from the dye you used. They end up needing medical attention, and then name both you and MY Salon Suites in a lawsuit.

You’re working as a makeup artist at a wedding expo and an attendee suffers a severe allergic reaction to the foundation you used. They sue both you and the event organizer for not properly vetting their vendors.

You practice massage therapy and work out of a local gym as an independent contractor. One of the members trips over a bubble in the flooring while leaving your room. They fall, hit their face on a piece of gym equipment, and need stitches and dental work. They sue you and the gym owner for not keeping the walkway safe.

How Much Does an Additional Insured Cost?

BBI’s general and professional liability policy allows you to add a single additional insured for $15 per year. Or, you can add unlimited additional insureds for only $30 per year.

Fees for additional insureds are paid annually when you sign up for your plan, or at the time of purchase if you add them to your plan later on.

How Do I Add Additional Insureds to My Policy?

Adding additional insureds to your insurance policy is simple. You can do it when you sign up for your initial policy by following the prompts at sign up. You can also add them at any time after that through your client portal. Simply follow these steps:

  • Login to your dashboard
  • Under “manage policies,” select “add landlord, employer, event” and add the name, address, and email of your additional insured
  • Check out and pay

Be proactive and demonstrate your commitment to safety and trust by adding necessary additional insureds sooner rather than later.
